Hall 4
Street fighting in Stalingrad
The exposition of the hall is devoted to the street fighting in the period from the 13th of September till the 19th of November, 1942.
In the middle of the hall there is a model of Stalingrad. After the mass air bombardments and intense street fighting 91% of the city was destroyed.
The exhibits tell about the fighting at the area of the Stalingrad railway station, the Square of the 9th of January, the Mamayev Hill, the northern and the southern districts of the city.
Nearly every building became a fortress. In the photos you can see Pavlov House and its defenders. The heroic defence of this building lasted 58 days, it became a symbol of courage and fortitude.
In the hall there is the rifle of a famous sniper Vasily Zaytsev who killed over 300 Nazis.
There is a complex devoted to the Volga Military Flotilla under the command of the Counter-admiral D. D. Rogachev.
You can learn about the 138th division that was surrounded at the bank of the Volga and during 42 days repulsed the attacks of four German divisions.
In Stalingrad the assault teams were formed. The armament, photos and documents tell about these unique groups that were very effective in street fighting.
In the hall there is a lithographic stone. The Nazis prepared it in order to print leaflets about the capture of Stalingrad. On the stone there is an inscription: “Stalingrad has fallen! Moscow is the head of the Soviet Union, Stalingrad is its heart”. But the city carried on fighting in ashes and ruins, and not a single leaflet was printed.
The complex of exhibits reveals the tragedy and courage of the civil population.
